BASTOGNE IN TEN MINUTES

BASTOGNE IN TEN MINUTES

The battle for Bastogne lasted an excruciatingly long month. But here Lieutenant Clair Hess of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, provides commentary for a short black-and-white film about Bastogne made by the Army-Navy Screen Magazine in 1945. It was part of a series shown to GIs around the world. Hess was wounded by machine-gun fire just minutes after landing in Normandy on D-Day. He recovered from his wounds only to suffer another ordeal in the Belgian Ardennes. Some of the images shown here were shot elsewhere in the Bulge. Note the heartfelt thanks to the airmen who came to the Screaming Eagles’ rescue.
