BOND OF BROTHERS

As an historical consultant for the grave adoption foundation at the American cemetery in Margraten, I was pleased to report on Facebook in April this year that the remains of a soldier listed on the Walls of the Missing had at last been identified. John P. Sersha, a private of the 82nd Airborne Division, went missing during Operation Market Garden on 27 September 1944. DNA research in 2016 confirmed that for 72 years his remains, marked as unknown, had in fact been resting at the Ardennes American Cemetery in Neuville-en-Condroz, Belgium. In this picture, Private Sersha’s remains can be seen coming home to Minnesota at last, greeted by his 97-year-old brother and a nephew. Both men combined their efforts, spending decades on cracking the case and refusing to give up on the memory of a loved one.
