Watery graves

A Dutch team is currently involved in the recovery of a British Wellington bomber that was shot down over the IJsselmeer with its Polish crew in May 1941 during a raid against a German target. It is estimated that there are some 500 World War II crash locations in the Netherlands alone which have not yet been investigated. Of the missing crew members, some 600 are British, 228 American, and 247 German. Many of the American airmen are listed on the Walls of the Missing at the Margraten cemetery where I am an historical consultant for the adoption foundation. All of the names on these walls, like the graves, have been adopted by civilians in the Netherlands and beyond.
