TROMPE L’OEIL

TROMPE L’OEIL

Just recently, close to six hundred pieces of ammunition were unearthed during utility works in Michamps, a hamlet immediately northeast of Bastogne. As I recount in detail in my newest book, this is an area where in early January 1945 the American 6th Armored Division engaged in fierce battle with the Waffen SS. But, to the surprise of many, on closer inspection this particular ammunition find turned out to have nothing to do with the Battle of the Bulge at all. The objects in the picture are German mortar grenades alright, but they date back to World War I and not World War II. More evidence of Belgium as Europe’s perennial battlefield.
